About Waterbody

Vijayanarayanam is one of the largest tanks in the Tirunelveli district. It is believed by the local people that the tank was built by a Pandya king, SivalamaraPandyanwho lived in the 16th century. A Tamil poem entitled Sivalamarakaviyam says that the Pandya king SivalamaraPandiyan gave money to Vijayan and Narayanan, both brothers residing in Nanguneri to excavate a tank which was named after them as Vijaya Narayanan tank. The local people proudly say if the tank gets filled there won’t be any water scarcity up to Tiruchendur town which is close to the sea and about 60Kms away. The presence of this huge tank supports bird life in Koonthankulam bird sanctuary as it is situated near to it. It’s a potential site for birding and over 200 species of birds have been recorded here. This tank also provides nesting habitats for ground nesting birds such as Lapwing, Plovers etc. This tank also supports grazing of local livestock.
